Question:
Previous lodger still using this address, any help?

A couple of years ago i took on a lodger. They stayed several months. After they moved out we had problems with bailiffs about a yr ago looking for debt on a previous proper they'd rented, but got it all sorted. Continued to get post addressed to them but i returned to sender, recently got another one but this was hand written on the envolope and so annoyed i opened. It was a P60 for the pervious tax yr with this address as their current address, but they haven't lived here for years. Any advice on what to do?
Thanks

I'd inform the Tax Office and maybe contact the Post Office to see if they would stop delivering the mail.

Go to your local council offices and get then removed from the electoral roll for starters, this will stop junk mail, then return everything to sender without opening as it is illegal to open other peoples mail.We have the same problem with the previous owners(and their lodgers) mail and it is annoying.

If there is an address on the envelope you could write them a letter asking them to remove these people from their mailing list.

Write "Not at this address - return to sender" on the envelopes and drop them back in the mailbox. Don't open them at all, just return them - every single one of them. You could get in serious trouble if the person found out you opened them and decided to press charges.

You can also just throw them away if you wish. The person moved out and left no forwarding address, and assuming you have no way of contacting the person, you aren't responsible for his/her mail.

There is probably little you can do to stop receiving the mail other than talking with the post office to see if they can stop delivering mail with this person's name on it.

Is a P60 a tax form? I'd just keep writing MOVED or RETURN TO SENDER on the envelope and giving it back to the letter carrier. It's not really your problem.

Just mark the letters "No longer at this address," or "Return to Sender."

BTW I would strongly suggest you do not open any more of this person's mail, annoying as it may be. You could go to jail for this.

As long as you're registered with your council tax and on the electoral role then it will be all official and you have proof that they don't live there and you do. Short of following up every letter you get addressed to them, you'd be ok to just ignore them.

Send it back, and next time do not open them just send them back.

By opening future mail and could be a debt letter, you are saying the person lives there, and sending it back to avoid it.

Just keep returning things marked 'gone away' - they will eventually stop.
