Question:
Buying an amazing house with potential but no off-street parking?

So, I found this great property in a very good, sought after street. It is tucked in and quite private. However... the only downside is that it has no off-street parking. I believe that this is reflected in the price.

Would you ever consider buying a house with no off-street parking? what about all these lovely, popular Victorian terraced properties with no parking whatsoever?

Thank you!

I have never considered any house that lacks off-street parking. Were I to move to a city having decent public transportation or other alternatives, I might consider it. But, I'm retired and have no need to make my life more complicated.

I bought a house with no off street parking and double yellow lines outside. I bought a permit for a local car park just down the road. If I have lots of things to unload, I park on the double yellows, unload and then go and park. I don't find it inconvenient. The previous owners did as they had a young daughter and found it a pain to manage buggy, baby and shopping (one of the reasons why they moved). If you love the house and can put up with the parking issue, go ahead. If you think that it might be a problem, then think about it and do some research into where others in the street park.

My previous house had no off street parking, but I could park on the street outside and for the most part, usually managed to park close by.

I would want off-street parking, but at the same time I doubt I'd be looking in the same type of places you are which sounds like a large city.

Just like any other issue- I would look to see if anything can be changed to make this better. Perhaps an easement from a neighbor that allows you to park off street and could be passed on to future owners of the property? If there can never be any off street parking- that would permanently lower the value for me unless this is a property that would attract mostly people that do not own cars or anything else that needs parking.

That would depend on you and your own needs, personally I wouldn't one of my priorities is safe and secure off street parking, ideally a driveway and garage but certainly a gated driveway.

Look at the on-street parking - do you need a permit? Is there much available?

It depends upon the local area - if that is the norm for that area, then you could get away with it. If it is unusual to not have parking, then I'd pass. It would be too difficult to sell the place in the future. Now, if there is room to put in even a single-space garage, that would be worth it, and that's what I'd do. That's the only way I would do it, but that's just me. Parking (and security) is important!

Have you done any investigating on how hard it is to find street parking? In some places it is relatively easy and it others it is a nightmare. Are there any parking places nearby you can pay a monthly fee? Do you have to drive everyday and return when parking could be an issue?

All of this would have to factor into it.

That wouldn't be a deal-breaker for me but everyone has a pet-peeve and if that is yours it should be considered carefully although... it is a seller's market right now and houses are being bought up like hotcakes.

My pet-peeve would be the neighborhood but even then it would be hard not to take a good deal if the house is sound and at an affordable price, but that's just me.
