So as most have heard by now, Cox cable has set a data cap on their internet subscribers. My house included. Five of us live in the same house (because we all attend college), so as expected we went well over the cap. Cox cable is charging the house $110. My roommates have decided it is only fair if I pay $60 because I twitch stream taking up most of the data. Not only can I not afford to pay this every month, but I also think it is unjust. We never agreed to it in the lease, so should I even pay? It was clearly stated that to stay here all we would be paying is $600 rent and we would all split electricity. Is there a workaround where we could get a different cheaper internet plan?

You admit you are the one that exceed the cap on the cable bill. It is not to difficult to me as to who should pay the most of the cable bill. "YOU"

If you are unable to pay the extra cost of using the cable services, why are you over exceeding the cap. Your logic escapes me.

If this is your logic, you need to return to your parents home, where they would pay for their children use of gas, electric, cable, food and other things of the household.

You would normally your lease would not indicate the share of the utilities each tenant would pay. Your lease agreement would indicate the rent you are required to pay each month, deposit you are required to pay and the terms of the lease agreement, how long the lease would run.

I hope this has been of some benefit to you, good luck.

Just because you didn't agree to pay a share of the internet cost does not mean you don't have to. You got internet, you all use it and you use it most so you owe the lion's share. If the other four agree that a $60 is fair for you to pay, then that's what you have to pay. It is possible that other internet providers are in your area. You will have to do your research on that and then convince the others to agree to change the service based on the price and usage. The services vary by area and I have no idea what else you might have. We don't even have Cox where we live.

I think your extreme over usage increased the bill so pay up.

I'm trying to be nice here, but I'm not really understanding your logic. You admit to using a large amount of data and then don't think you should pay for it? Who should? Why do you think you should get this for free?

The only issue here is if you don't think the $60 is a fair share for what your usage is. Then you argue for a straight split, but if you reasonably know you're the one running the bill up and you try this then really all you're doing it knowingly stealing from your roommates.

As for other options, do an internet search. There are sites which will give you your options for your address. If cost is an issue, then look into DSL. Having the fastest option is a luxury which you admit you can't afford.

Technically they can't make you pay. But they can do something like put on a password and refuse to give it to you.

Your lease has nothing to do with the cable bill.

Absent a WRITTEN agreement among the roommates that says otherwise, you equally share any and all utilities, including Cox. Since there are 5 of you, that's $22 each for the overage charges.

Your extreme over usage increased the bill SO pay up.

You went over your data cap, so whoever's name the bill is in is responsible for payment. If that person decides to shut off the internet, then so be it.

Pony up, dude, since it seems you are the one who is using the allotted data. You have to use the provider who is contracted for your area.

Its YOUR fault the bill is so high. So pay up. Look at the bill and all the things listed that show up. calculate everything that you twitch streamed and did on there. whatever that total is, is what you owe. if that comes to 60 pay 60, if its 80 pay 80. but since you admit you use up most of that data, then you owe most of the bill. thats the price you pay when you go over your limit in data. if you don't want a huge bill then stop going over your data amount. its not fair to your roommates that you run up a high bill like that and make them split the bill 5 ways with you when you made that big bill. why should you pay 22 dollars like them when you are the one who made the bill so high in the first place. so no you don't get to pay 22 like them. you pay 60. the others split the remaining 50 4 ways. pay up. because whoevers name is on the account is the one who can shut everything off and then you won't have any internet. if you want your internet cough up the dough. if it was my name on the account i'd shut everything off

The lease isn't a contract between you and the roommates. It's between each of you and the LL. This has nothing at all to do with the lease.

You could look for cheaper internet, but in the meantime, if you are streaming and you KNOW you use most of the data, pay for it and don't be an ******.

If you used the lion share then you PAY the lion share. Not a hard concept.

One, pay for what you use. If you can't afford $60 a month worth of Twitch, don't use $60 a month worth of Twitch.

Two, what, exactly, is stopping you going to Cox's web site and checking the price of an uncapped plan?

This is life, it is not in any of their control, utilities and such have price increases and that has to be covered. So pay your 60 this month, stop using up more then your share of data so the the increase can be spread around by all 6 of you.

As far as internet plans, it depends on your area as to what is offered.
