Baby stuff always sells very quickly in my city (but, if you don't have young kids, you probably don't have baby stuff). Other than that, it can vary... sometimes furniture is a big hit, sometimes clothing, sometimes toys, etc. In my city, it's still popular to pay for a newspaper ad in the classifieds because those who are serious about sales make sure they have the classifieds and map their route. Facebook is a great way to advertise to all of your friends - I typically post 7-14 days in advance, 3 days before, the day before, and the morning of the sale. Make sure that you list the good items that you have, i.e. women's clothing (size if it's mainly one size), toys, books, sports' equipment, furniture, etc. This way, if people are looking for something specific... they'll know to stop by your sale if you've advertised. The last sale I had, we had sold $300 worth before the sale even started thanks to facebook (people were coming early and bidding for the bigger items over fb). Books typically don't sell very well in my city (children's books are the exception) - I'd still try to sell them if you have some you want to get rid of - if they don't sell you can always donate them. Make sure to put up a few signs leading to your home/road the night before the sale - list the address and date/time of the sale (make sure you remove them when the sale is over). Make sure that you have plenty of change (tens, fives, ones, and change). Good luck to you.

You would be surprised what people will buy at a garage sale. Put everything you don't want around anymore out there. The best way to advertise is to put up signs leading from a main road to your house Friday evening after the zoning people have gone home for the weekend and make sure they are down by Sunday evening or you might get a ticket. The bargain hunters are out early, so be ready to start at 6:00am. Most yard sales seem to wrap up around 1:00pm, but if activity is good don't shut down.

Anything that's not junk would be good. There is nothing worse than attending a garage sale that is full of tack.
You could advertise in your local paper, put notices up on sign posts etc.

Everything you want to get rid of. The key is in the pricing. Price it cheap. Years ago when I was moving I had a sale. I had cleaned out under my sink. I put all the bottles of stuff that were half full or less & stuff I hadn't used in awhile in a box to throw out. It was junk so why move it?! Somebody said this isn't marked & asked it I'd take $5 for it. I got $5 for garbage.
When it's over take the leftovers to Goodwill or another charity. The items they won't take, throw away. Don't take it back into your house.
It's a lot of work but have fun with it.

Best place to advertise a garage sale is free on craigslist. Most (all?) the garage sale ad sites source their ads from craigslist too.

Put everything you want to get rid of on the sale. One persons junk can be a treasure to others. If they dont like your stuff they will not but it.
