We're installing a fence soon and our lot is not a nice square shape but it butts up against some open space owned by the city. Is it possible to buy a small amount of the land from the city in order to make our backyard a nice square shape? p.s. It's less than .10 of an acre. Has anyone done this before?

The cost to the city would be very high, so expect to shell out big bucks. The open land will need to be subdivided, and everything surveyed. Then the zoning on the land you want has to be changed, and it is recorded in many areas.

Expect the process to take approximately 2 years. The city has to not only approve this themselves, but it will go to public hearing so that any community groups or citizens can weigh in on the loss of the open land.

Check with your local mayor 's office or city hall to see about this. They are the ones that will best know about that land. Those offices should be able to address your question best.

If you have a city commissioner or the equivalent, start there. They will be able to steer you in the right direction.
