Question:
How do I protect myself with a rental lease I signed with my landlord?

My landlord is refinancing and needed to give his bank a lease agreement from my apartment situation. My agreement with him is month to month but I just signed a 1 year lease showing I'm paying 3 times as much as I'm paying now. I did this as a favor to him. He then made a copy of the lease for me a copy of days later and wrote on it "This lease is null and void" and he signed and dated it. My question is does his "null and void" copy of the lease legally free me from the responsibility of the first lease? Is there anything else I need to do? Thanks.

I would insist on having the original marked "null and void".

Also, it's not wise to help the landlord commit mortgage fraud. It is a crime (felony) and you can be prosecuted for knowingly participating in such.

Why are you helping someone commit fraud?
